Fleece blanket

Kristen at We Are THAT Family created this great fleece blanket with her kids last week. It has been on the top of my list of things to do with the kids for their cousins as a Christmas gift this year. We completed the first one this morning!!I have never done anything like this before so was uncertain how to go about it. I read through all the comments on Kristen's post, showed the kids, and got to work! I purchased 2 yards of fleece at Wal-Mart a couple days ago. I only bought enough for one to test this on. . .I knew she would like the monkey fabric so that part was easy. I will probably buy a larger piece for my older niece but this is fine for the 5-yr-old. One suggestion I read was to a different fabric for the front and back and the kids like that idea so we'll see what we find when we go out shopping later.

I laid the fabric out and folded it in half, then cut along the fold. One of the comment suggestions was to run a piece of tape to keep the fringe cuts "even" and that pleased my anal personality perfectly. (I placed the tape 3" from the edge.)
I also had Thomas go and mark the tape at 1" intervals. Did I mention I used to be a math teacher??? Anyway, while Margaret helped me to place the tape, Thomas came behind us making his marks and Marie started cutting the fringe strips. As soon as she had a couple cut Margaret ditched me to begin tying. Frederick eventually got in on that part too.I didn't know what to do with the corners.
I had read a suggestion saying to "use a CD case to cut out the corners". . .only now after completing the entire project do I understand that I was supposed to CUT THE CORNERS OUT -- ha! Didn't "get" that part -- again, I am NOT a crafty-sewer-kind-of-person. This is how I did it: I cut some fringe strips in it
And tied it together.
I think I'll try cutting the corners out on the next one. I learn by doing, obviously. The whole "cutting out the corners" make sense now :)

Anyway, we're all really pleased with the result and can't wait to go buy more for their other cousin. Thanks, Kristen, for the great idea!!!
