Friday Favorites - It's still January. . .

Yep, that's where I am. . .just "getting through" January (and February and March and April). . .to get to BOATING SEASON - ha!  I saw this graphic several years ago and came across it last night in my January photo collections - time to share again!!!

Thank you, Andrea and Erika, for the Friday Favorites link-up.  This makes me look back on my week, month, year, life and show all that I have to be grateful for and makes me intentional during the week to NOTICE (word of the year) things around me.

Not many pictures this week. . .it's January after all :/

Lunch or dinner one night this week - couldn't even tell you which it was.  When I'm not in the office I try really hard to take a "lunch break" and make something hot and read a book, blogs or something that's NOT work-related.  Meals are simple these days - we don't really eat together during the week because the timing rarely works.  I do love some time by myself  each day:)
Sincerely, he could be my Picture of the Day every day :)

This is the room I work out of when I'm at home - he just follows the sun all.day.long.  Spoiled and loved.
There are two podcasts I mark my week by - Monday morning I listen to the Lazy Genius and Thursday morning I listen to Melanie and Sophie.  This bonus episode dropped at some point and I listened to it on my drive to one of our branch locations yesterday - so glad they recorded this one!!  I believe they talked a little bit about the "reverse new years' resolutions" too - "things I won't do" :)
This was a neat surprise in the mail this week.  I have been reading Jennifer Skinner's Five Friday Favorites for years and years.  She moved over to Substack (I have lots of thoughts - Amy has mentioned in my comments she does too and I think they are the same) but because I love her writing I do go to Substack to read them.  (But now in linking this, I realize she puts them on her webpage too - good to know.). Anyway, she was giving away a couple of copies of this book she contributed to and I was one of the lucky ones :). I read her essay as soon as I got it - loved it.  It was a letter to her grandmother and memories she had and how much has changed about HOW we worship (vs when she was younger and what Grandma taught/modeled) and how full that Banquet Table may be when she gets there to join her someday.  I loved it.
I only have 5 snowmen so it limits me on talking points - I need those kinds of boundaries in my life :).
Stephen stopped by on Sunday after church for lunch and then we got Nana and Grandpa to stay a little longer to play cards.  Nana "doesn't remember" euchre as well as she used to so Stephen said they would play together.  It was them and me against Tom and Grandpa. . .they ended up winning in the last hand - it was a pretty close game.  Stephen blames it on me - and he should.  He and I don't use the same strategies - he's able to reason on a level completely outside of my capacity - ha!
Time to log on my other computer and get started on the last day of the week for me - it's been a good one for the most part.  I put in a couple of early mornings this week so I could log off early to go to Crossville to play tennis with my Cookeville friend again - this time I'm bringing two Knoxville friends with me :). I've got a 3-day weekend (bankers' hours still amaze me that they are real) - not much planned, but I'm o.k. with that.  STILL have a few blogs to catch up on as well as podcasts and Tanya linked lots of good shows to consider. . .it's January after all. . .a small indulgence for these shorter, colder days, right?
Love,
Jenni

    1. Some days I find myself standing in the sun by our back door just to feel the warmth of it :)

  2. Thanks for the shoutout and also the info about the lazy genius episode. She is a "sometimes" listen for me, and I missed that one. Hope you have a great weekend!

    1. You too! She used to be a "sometimes" for me too but she's expanded her content so much if nothing else I'll flip through it :). Your "always" (Midlife Matters) is a "sometimes" for me :). Please keep posting when they have an episode you really like!

  3. Good job winning a book! Let me know if you get to the bottom of Substack! It's nice that they are also putting it on their website, though. Why do people have to hate on blogs? I was late to the game! I am over winter! I am thinking about going to the Cuban restaurant for a mojito and pretending it's not winter.

    1. If I were in Louisville I would join you!!! In my weekend research on Lexington (never really considered it a destination or anything) I'm seeing what rich cities both you and Jen live in!!! We will make our next Bourbon Trail weekend (even though we haven't done this one yet I'm confident there WILL be "another" one) in your town :)
I don't think people "hate" blogs - it's like anything else. . .some love them and for some they are just a "season of life". I use mine like a diary - it's just been in the last year or two that I've really started "meeting" people that I think I could be friends with IRL, not just the popular ones with thousands of readers. I always say "good for them!" - who can guess where their influence will take them unless they step out and try something, right? Now Substack - I'm NOT about paying to read anyone's content. . .I do like the format a lot but I don't know what would make me actually PAY for it. Sometimes I do with podcasts, but I do understand the cost/time involved with those is so much more than just writing and publishing on a mainly "free" platform. We'll see what happens. I don't think EVERYTHING we do in life needs to have a $$ amount attached to it, but that's just me. Good for those that see an opportunity to make a buck and have the skill/luck to do it!!

  4. Oh I LOVE that graphic! We live on a lake and while we got rid of our boat years ago I definitely live for lake season. I shared a reverse things I won't do list this year on the blog and it was a lot of fun. I'm more likely to keep those resolutions than the regular ones.

    1. I wonder if I read your list?? I read quite a few after I caught up on all my "regular" blogs. I'll have to go back and see :). I like seeing how people interpret these prompts. . .

  5. I don't get the whole substance thing. Is is supposed to be a cooler platform/concept than blogging? I don't know. I have read some substack articles that I've enjoyed but they could have easily been on a blog or on a website. I will not pay to read someone's article- that much I know! The collection of pictures of your dog laying down in the warmth of the sun- love it! I would be broadside sunlight if I could :). We were talking about euchre the other day. I haven't played it in years. I hope your weekend is going well :).

  6. Does Donnie play euchre too??? If so we have our next get-together already planned :). Our kids think it's "so cool" that we used to sit around the tables in the cafeteria at lunch in HS and play - good times. We have a friend from Indiana who we sometimes play with but we have to do "house rules" - he plays slightly differently (with the dealer, starting, etc) so we just change it up depending where we are playing :).
Read my reply to Amy above on Substack - I also have an entire essay in my drafts on it - ha! I will never publish it, but so many thoughts about it. . . .
